There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you take a meal out of the kitchen and into the open air. When you are on holiday, the goal is to break away from the “autopilot” of daily life, and at Cherry View House, our garden is designed to help you do exactly that. Here our spotlight is the garden and dining outdoors.
Whether it’s a slow breakfast on the patio or a sunset dinner under the terrace umbrella, eating outdoors—or al fresco—is more than just a change of scenery. It is a scientifically backed way to enhance your holiday experience. Here is why you should make the garden the heart of your stay in Bristol.
Food Simply Tastes Better
Have you ever noticed how a simple glass of wine or a piece of fresh bread feels more indulgent when enjoyed outside? Scientists suggest that our sensory perception shifts when we are in nature. Away from the humming of a refrigerator or the glare of a television, your senses of smell and taste sharpen. At Cherry View House, the scent of blooming jasmine or fresh-cut grass acts as a natural seasoning, making every meal feel like a gourmet event.
A Natural Reset for the Mind
Dining outdoors encourages “slow living.” When you sit at our terrace table, you aren’t just eating; you’re watching the sway of the tall grasses, listening to the birds in the cherry trees, and feeling the Bristol breeze. This connection to nature lowers cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and boosts positive vibes. By the time you finish your coffee, you’ll find that the “mental clutter” of work and home has drifted away.
Better Digestion and Better Sleep
The relaxed atmosphere of a garden meal encourages us to chew more slowly and engage in deeper conversation. This mindful approach to eating is a gift to your digestive system. Furthermore, spending your evening meal in the natural evening light helps regulate your circadian rhythm. Watching the light fade over the garden while you dine prepares your body for a deeper, more restorative sleep in the quiet comfort of the house.
Creating Lasting Memories
Think back to your favorite holiday moments. Rarely do we remember the quick sandwich eaten at a desk, but we almost always remember the long, laughing lunches shared under a patio umbrella. The garden at Cherry View House provides a private, picturesque backdrop for those “big conversations” and shared jokes that define a great trip.
Make the Most of Your Stay
Our garden has been managed to offer something to visitors through the seasons.
- Spring: Dine among the first blossoms and the waking green of the borders.
- Summer: Find shade under the parasol for a mid-day feast.
- Autumn: Enjoy a crisp afternoon tea surrounded by golden hues.

For those who like sunlight when you dine here are our suggestions. From spring through summer the bottom patio gets sun from early morning to lunchtime depending on the season. For those very hot days its perfect for afternoon and evening meals because it gets well needed shade and is close to the kitche.
As the morning sun moves up the garden the terrace patio gets drenched around lunchtime and will keep it until the evening. It can get hot but the fig tree definitely offers a mediterean vibe and has a cooling effect. The top table is covered by a roof that keeps off the worst of the sun’s UV rays during the hottest days of summer but catches rays in the evening for maximum atmospheric effect. We challenge you to not be relaxed on a sunny evening at Cherry View House.
