Guide to using a woodburning stove

How do you use a woodburning stove safely

The wood-burning stove provides a wonderful, warm focal point for the room, but it is important to operate it safely and correctly. If you don’t have experience using wood burners safely, please read these instructions carefully before use.

There is a Carbon Monoxide Alarm installed in the living room. There room is well ventillated, but, the alarm is just for good measure. Carbon Dioxide cn build up if the fuel is not burning properly, for instance when wet wood is used or green wood is burned. All wood burned in the fire needs to be seasoned.
Flammable Items: Keep all combustible materials (furniture, curtains, clothes, firewood) at least 3 feet (90 cm) away from the stove.
Never Use Accelerants: Do not use any flammable liquids such as petrol, paraffin, or firelighters with accelerant to start the fire.
Never Burn Rubbish: Only burn the wood provided. Do not burn household rubbish, plastic, treated wood, or cardboard, as these can create a toxic smoke and damage the flue.
Overnight Burning: Do not leave the stove on high burn overnight. Always ensure the fire is low and the door to the wood burner is closed before you go to bed or leave the property.
Emergency Plan: Please familiarise yourself with layouts and exits from the property.

How to start a fire

Prepare the Stove: Ensure the stove is completely cool. Use the provided tools to remove excess ash from the grate and place in a bucket or bag. Leave a layer of ash up to the bottom of the grate to act as insulation (this stops the steel from cracking).
Open Air Vents: Fully open all the air control vents on the stove. This is usually a lever or slide control, which allows oxygen into the firebox.  The door latch also allows for a slightly open position to let more air in to get the fire going.
Create a Base: Place a couple of parallel, small logs front to back on either side of the burning. Place two or three natural firelighters in the middle of these logs.
Build a Stack: Build a tower or ‘teepee’ of kindling sticks on top of the firelighters. Ensure there are gaps for air to circulate.
Light and Close Door. Using a long match or lighter, light the firelighters from the bottom. Close the stove door, but leave it slightly ajar for the first few minutes to allow extra air for ignition.
Add Larger Logs: Once the kindling is burning strongly and the fire is established (after 10–15 minutes), add a couple of small logs. Use the provided heat-proof glove when opening the door.
Adjust Vents: Once the logs have fully caught fire, close and latch the door. You can then begin to adjust the air vents. The bottom vent controls the fire’s initial intensity, and the top vent controls the burn rate and heat output.

How to control the heat

To Increase Heat: Open the air vents further to increase the oxygen supply. This will make the fire burn more intensely and produce more heat.
To Decrease Heat: Partially close the air vents to reduce the oxygen supply. The fire will calm down, and the temperature will gradually lower.
Patience is Key: The stove takes time to react to adjustments. Make small changes and wait a few minutes to see the effect before adjusting again.

How to add more logs

Check the Embers: Wait until the logs have burned down to a bed of glowing, red embers.
Open Vents and Add Wood: Open the main air vent fully for about 30 seconds before opening the door. This will prevent smoke from coming into the room. Add a new log or two, keeping them loosely stacked.
Close and Readjust: Close the door and open the vents fully again until the new logs have caught fire. Then, close the vents back to your desired setting.

How to let the fire go out

Stop Adding Fuel: Do not add any more wood.
Let it Burn Down: Allow the remaining wood to burn down to embers.
Close Vents: Close all air vents completely to starve the fire of oxygen.

Troubleshooting

Problem: Fire won’t start or keeps going out.  Solution: Ensure all air vents are fully open. The wood may also not have enough space for air to circulate; rebuild the fire carefully.
Problem: Smoke comes into the room. Solution: Check that the chimney is not blocked. You may have opened the door too quickly to refuel. Always open the vents fully and wait 30 seconds before opening the door slowly.
Problem: Glass is getting black.  Solution: This is often a sign of a slow, inefficient burn. Check that the vents are open enough, you are not using wet wood, and you are not overfilling the stove.
