One of the best things about a short stay in Bristol at Cherry View House is the fantastic local area right on the doorstep. Guests often ask for low-key, local activities that don’t require a car or a long trip into the city centre. Our absolute favourite is a simple, refreshing walk to the nearby St George Park.
It’s the perfect excursion for a lazy morning, a sunny afternoon, or just to stretch your legs after a long journey.
Cherry View House offers incredibly straightforward access to one of Bristol’s most cherished green spaces. The walk itself is a pleasant stroll through a quiet, residential part of Bristol, giving you a real feel for the local atmosphere.
The journey takes around 15 to 20 minutes on foot, depending on your pace. It’s a flat, easy route, making it accessible for families, the elderly, or anyone with a pushchair. You simply head north from the house, along the local streets, and you’ll soon find yourself at the park’s entrance. The walk itself is a chance to admire the unique Victorian and Edwardian architecture that characterises this part of the city.
Arriving at St George’s Park, you’re immediately greeted by a sense of calm. Closest to Cherry View House is the entrance to the top corner of the park from Howard Street. A choice of paths and directions will be presented at this point. It’s an oasis in the heart of East Bristol. This park has a rich history, having been a public space since the late 19th century, and it’s clearly a well-loved local hub. Once you arrive at the park the urban hustle melts away. You are greeted by mature trees and open green spaces, the hallmarks of one of Bristol’s finest suburban Victorian parks.
So, what can you do once you arrive?
Plenty!
If you’re staying with family, the children’s play area is a must-visit. It’s extensive, well-maintained, and features swings, slides, and climbing frames. The park is very secure, making it easy for parents to relax while the kids burn off some energy.
A Walk Around the Lake? The centrepiece of the park is its beautiful large lake. It’s ideal for a gentle walk and some quiet contemplation. You’ll often see ducks and other birdlife pottering around. Benches are dotted along the path, providing perfect spots to sit, read a book, or simply watch the world go by.
Fitness and Fun. For those who want to stay active during their stay at Cherry View House, St George’s Park has you covered. There are large open green spaces perfect for a picnic, a game of football, or a quick run around. You’ll also find tennis courts, and outdoor table tennis, ensuring there’s something for every fitness level. For Tennis contact your host at Cherry View House who can book a court.
Refuelling. All that walking and playing works up an appetite! The park has its own lovely little café, offering coffee, ice cream, and light snacks. It’s the ideal spot to treat yourself before the onward journey. Close-by on Church Road there various cafes including Grounded Cafe with it’s outdoor seating at the back and rustic interiour set up for large and small groups.
A Local Gem. St George’s Park truly embodies the spirit of local Bristol life. It’s friendly, diverse, and always buzzing with activity. It’s not a major tourist attraction, and that’s its charm. It offers a genuine slice of life in BS5.
